Goods & Services Tax (GST) Guide
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a destination-based, multi-stage indirect tax structure levied on the supply of goods and services. Since its introduction, it has consolidated multiple state and central taxes into a unified single-tax regime, improving market efficiency.
Intrastate vs. Interstate Tax Division
GST is classified based on where the seller and buyer are located:
- Intrastate Sales (Within State): The GST tax is divided equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For example, an 18% GST rate translates to 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
- Interstate Sales (Across States): A single consolidated tax called IGST (Integrated GST) is charged, which goes entirely to the Central Government to be redistributed.
How to Add GST (Tax Exclusive)
If your product price does not include tax, you calculate the tax to be added:
GST Tax Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100)
Gross Price = Base Price + GST Tax Amount
Gross Price = Base Price + GST Tax Amount
How to Remove GST (Tax Inclusive)
If the retail price already includes GST and you want to extract the base net price:
Net Base Price = Gross Price × [100 / (100 + GST Rate)]
GST Tax Amount = Gross Price - Net Base Price
GST Tax Amount = Gross Price - Net Base Price
